Valle de los Caídos is an impressive monument to those people who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War. A touching tribute to the 40,000 victims whose remains lie buried underground. The immense structure has a basilica and a complex set of tombs that are located in a mountain valley north of El Escorial. The monument is crowned by a huge cross 150 meters high. It is supposedly the world`s tallest monument of its condition and is visible miles away. This impressive place is an admirable achievement, but it has brought enough controversy in turn. In fact, many argue the nature of a monument that commemorates only two names, the dictator Francisco Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the fascist Falange. Many voices believe that the monument is a tribute to the victorious side rather than a symbol of post-Civil War reconciliation.
